Comic Worksheet
Dealing with ways and means to implement comics in foreign language teaching, our task this time was to design a comic strip and a corresponding worksheet providing reasonable tasks. There are several web tools that help you create your own comic without any difficulties such as Pixton, ToonDoo, Bitstrips, and Witty Comics. I decided for the latter, Witty Comics, because I liked its simplicity and design.
Below the comic you will find the worksheet (downloadable as PDF file). Since there are quite a few personal pronouns, the comic might serve as introductory exercise for a personal pronoun session and the worksheet gives examples how to combine a comic with grammar exercises practicing pronouns.
Offering both visual and textual elements, comics can be a creative and appealing way to motivate your students, arouse their interest in a topic and support their learning process since the visual support and the characters help them understand and approach a new and unfamiliar phenomenon. Furthermore, comic strips might be used for other fun activities training your students' communication and writing skills. For instance, you might consider creating a comic for literature classes, i.e. you can make use of the mentioned web tools and have your students interpret a passage or chapter from a novel with a comic instead of a regular essay. Another possibility might be to use cartoons as a starter to set your students thinking about a particular situation or topic.
